So while ripping all of my cds, I came across Coldplay again, which I probably haven't listened to since I lived in San Diego. These albums were practically the soundtrack to my life then, when the huge breakup was going on. These lyrics in particular, jumped out at me:
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Is this particularly relevant to life right now as just the other night (hot back-waxing night), Johnny and I were discussing what made us alive, human, and whether or not there is something...supernatural to us. Johnny strongly believes in the soul, and bases all of his actions on the bettering of his soul and karma bank.
Raised as an athiest and a freverent follower of science, I can't justify the existence of the soul. I can't believe that we were each issued an individual soul at birth. Afterall, we, and everything else in the universe, are just clumps of different chemicals. But I can't possibly deny that there is a life force in all living things, and that we feel things, and have an aesthetic sense, and find things too soft/bitter/yellow. What is this force in us?
But the word "soul" is too steeped in religion, too supersticious and too...unscientific for me.
I think my feelings about people lay somewhere between the scientific and the ethereal:
We have a "collective soul" of sorts. There is a big bucket of soul that we came out of, the same mixture of chemicals, and we are all the same thing. I is you and you is me. All of us are cut from the same cloth. Our experiences in life and the way we're raised differentiate us from each other. But we should all be able to connect with each other on that basic human level. All of us! Sadly, there are people who are taught to distrust people and to favor groups of people who look or think like them. How sad, to deny our origins.
So are we not all soulmates then? What makes someone a better soulmate is the collection of experiences s/he picks up along the way which you can relate to.
So the lyrics. My beliefs about human existence are vague, unscientific and emotional, yet for me, they override the solidity of science.
