I know I keep saying this, but last night I attended the weirdest event ever. The Tate Modern puts on these live art things you can watch every week, usually a speech or something. Last night brought this American painter, Matt Mullican, who gets put under hypnosis and then unleashes himself in front of an audience. I thought this would be cool - we all hope that our deep inner-selves have some kind of beautiful eye that our normal everyday selves are too distracted or too dull to nurture. Matt Mullican had a chance to unleash that creative genius and I wanted to see what he would do.

Dude, I don't know what kind of suggestions his hypnotist gave him when he put him under, but this "performance" was basically us watching him wig out for an hour and a half. I don't believe he could see the audience (there were about 150 of us sitting on the floor infront of him). He paced, he cuddled his sketchbook, he flailed his arms around, he lapped up coffee, he screamed, he had obsessive complusive fits, he wiggled across the floor, the berated himself for being a phony and a "fucking shit". There was also about 10 minutes of painting, where the message was that he was a fucking shit.

It was...scary, riviting, embarrassing, sad, boring, funny, and most of all, interesting. There is a spot in all of our brains that is constantly doubting our cool factor and competency to fit in with all the other normal human beings around us. This guy let us see all of it. It was kind of like that movie with JLo, The Cell, where she wanders around the killer's brain and sees his entire thought process.

I guess I'm glad I went. It has certainly given me a lot to think about. And I got in for free! I tried to book tickets online but their site isn't working properly so I just showed up at around 9:30pm. I was gutted to learn that tickets were all sold out so I just wandered the Tate for half an hour. THAT is a good modern museum. It is ENORMOUS and filled with awesome stuff. There are also these sides that shoot through the museum. Some are from the second or third floor, but some are from the 7th floor! It was too late to book by the time I got there, but I've got to go back. It looks amazing. Anyway, the Matt Mullican thing was all sold out by I just hung around and amazingly, there were extra tickets and they gave me one for FREE! So you never know. I am certainly going to take this as a lesson to show up to sold out events more often.

  2. that's amazing and intense. i think that if i let myself be that way in a conscious way more often, perhaps more of my problems would dissipate. wow.

  3. oh, and also, the room at the tate with the mark rothkos in it is one of the most spiritual places i've ever been. i know that sounds fruity coming from me, but i genuinely experienced something extraordinary sitting in this room staring at those paintings.
