Had a very nice dinner last night at Archipelago - a place that specializes in the exotic and the indulgent. The decor is kinda asian, kinda african, kinda zen. Animal derived curios from far flung places clutter the the dimly-lit walls and tables. I sat on an elaborate velvet and cushion covered throne.
Our appetites were whetted by peacock and crocodile, locusts and crickets. These usually came with a spicy fruity dip.
I ordered the wildebeast (gnu), which I found chewy and more or less beef-like. The zebra however, was delicious. I feel a little bad about liking horse meat so much...
For dessert Archipelago offers a chocolate covered scorpion, but I was done with bugs - all legs and no flavor.
This place is not cheap! A complete meal including the starter, salad, wine, palate-cleansing sorbet and dessert will run you over $100. However, all the animals are responsibly obtained through either free range farms or recognized culling programs.
And it's not like you could pay me $100 to slaughter a zebra and grill it up for you. Well worth the money in my opinion.
